As one descends the Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon, the disconformity separating the younger Coconino Sandstone from the older Hermit Formation is encountered. The reddish color of the Hermit is an iron oxide stain. Both sedimentary rock unit were deposited during the Permian, about 280 million years ago.
