Experience
AZGS geologists have more than 125 years of bedrock and surficial geologic mapping experience. Since 2000, we have produced more than one hundred 7.5-minute geologic quadrangles & numerous reports, all of which can be accessed at the AZGS Online Document Repository.
Bedrock Mapping Team. Our bedrock mapping team has experience mapping geologic structures in crystalline and sedimentary rocks in British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Ontario, central and southern Mexico, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and, of course, Arizona.
Surficial Mapping Team. Our surficial mapping team has decades of experience in the arid Southwest examining loosely consolidated rock materials exposed on the earth's surface and noting the physical and chemical composition of soil (e.g., degree of oxidation), fluvial sediments, sand and gravel, and weathered bedrock.
Methods & Technology
AZGS geologists use high resolution GPS receivers for pinpointing locations tied to copious notes on geologic features - lithology, structural geology, mineralogy, alteration, relative age, stratigraphy, paleoenvironment indicators, geomorphology, fossils, and more. Field sheets and images are ported into ESRI's ArcGIS application to construct a geodatabase and map products.
AZGS's surficial mapping team's field work is informed by satellite imagery and aerial photography, photogrammetry, and drone technology - videos, images, and digital models - to puzzle out geomorphic features, e.g., eroded fault scarps, river evolution patterns, Holocene and Pleistocene flood patterns, and associated geologic hazards.
