Mission Statement
Inform Arizonans of earthquake hazards and risk and encourage individuals, neighborhoods, businesses, and communities to adopt cost-effective recommendations to reduce earthquake losses, increase resilience, and speed societal recovery.
Chief Objectives of ACES
The Arizona Council on Earthquake Safety chief role is to provide a platform for professional and community stakeholders from government, industry, academia, engineering and the geosciences to holistically address earthquake science, hazards and risk that can impact the safety and resilience of the people, property and infrastructure of Arizona.
Forty percent of small businesses never reopen after a disaster and another 25 percent, that do reopen, fail within a year. (FEMA as reported in Government Technology Emergency Management July 2018)
Arizona Virtual Earthquake Clearinghouse
The Arizona Geological Survey, in partnership with the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and the AZGeo Data Hub, are working together to create a new Arizona Virtual Earthquake Clearinghouse (AVEC). A clearinghouse is an organization that coordinates data collection and sharing efforts among investigators working in response to a natural hazard or other emergency. The Arizona Virtual Earthquake Clearinghouse (AVEC) is a digital repository that collates and publishes data gathered by geoscientists, emergency responders, civil engineers, policymakers, and other stakeholders working in response to Arizona earthquakes.
AVEC is expected to officially go live March 2024, but interested parties can connect and participate in the planning process by contacting the AVEC team at azgs-info@arizona.edu. Although AVEC is primarily meant to support scientists, civil engineers, and emergency responders working in the immediate aftermath of an Arizona earthquake, membership is open to anyone interested in sharing or consuming post-Earthquake related data. There are no membership fees or other requirements to join AVEC.
