View south down Carbon Creek from Chuar Butte in eastern Grand Canyon. Paleozoic strata form the Palisades of the Desert in the distant canyon wall, which is east of the Colorado River. Desert View Tower is barely visible on the right horizon. The Palisades Fault separates lighter colored Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone from the darker Cardenas Basalt of Mesoproterozic age in Chuar Lava Hill in the middle distance. In the near distance, the Carbon Canyon Member of the Galeros Formation of the Chuar Group is folded into a syncline in the hill on the right side of the photograph. The Chuar Group and the syncline are of Neoproterozoic age. (Photo by Steve Rauzi)
