Meteor Crater from the southwest looking northeast. The view here is from southwest (bottom) to northeast (top). The mottled hummock ground in the foreground is rock debris of the Coconino Sandstone and Toroweap Formation that was displaced during the meteorite strike. Meteor Crater formed about 50,000 years ago during the Pleistocene. USGS's Gene Shoemaker used lessons learned at Meteor Crater to investigate and map lunar craters.
