Chiricahua Mountains | Cochise County, Arizona | Rhyolite hoodoos along Heart of Rocks Loop, Chiricahua National Monument. These rock formations were carved by ice and water from layers of volcanic ash-flow tuff blown out during the Turkey Creek caldera eruption 27 million years ago. Cochise Head Mountain is in the background, just left of center. The name of the rock outcropping stems from its supposed resemblance to the famous Chiricahua Apache chief. (Photo by Janel Day)
