The red rock country of Sedona consists of interbedded sandstone, shale, and limestone usually characterized by ledgy outcrops. Orange to reddish sandstone forms cliffs near Sedona. This unit includes the Supai Group and Hermit Shale. Reddish sandstones of the Pennsylvanian to Lower Permian Supai Group (?) crop out adjacent to AZ 89A, just north of Sedona.
