Picacho Peak has served as a landmark since before Spanish conquistadors came north out of Mexico exploring for gold and silver. The peak is enveloped by Picacho Peak State Park, situated on I-10, midway between Phoenix and Tucson. Volcanic rock is the cornerstone of the peak, but it is not, as once thought, the neck of an ancient volcano.
