Sunset Crater, lower center, the youngest cinder cone in the San Francisco volcanic field. The cone is approximately 300 m (1000 ft) high and 1 km (0.65 miles) in diameter at its base. The red oxidized cinder at the summit give the crater its name. Behind and to the right is O'Leary Peak a rhyodacitic volcanic dome.
On the upper left, the lower east slope of San Francisco Peaks; the yellow leaves of quaking aspen occur in early Autumn. The whitish ground below the aspen is a pumice quarry at the base of Sugarloaf Dome.
The full temporal range of volcanism here is from the Late Pliocene to the Holocene. (Photo by Ted Grussing)
