Cathedral Rock Spires, Sedona, Arizona

Cathedral Rock Spires, Sedona, Arizona

The Cathedral Rock spires near Sedona, Arizona, were formed by dominant NW-trending regional joints (at right angle to view direction) and subordinate joints roughly in line with the view direction. The Fort Apache limestone member of the Permian Schnebly Hill Sandstone is located in the lower part of the spires. Just in front of the pillars, but out of view, are NW-oriented12.8 Ma diabase dikes that once fed a small volcano, now eroded, that once lay directly over Cathedral Rock. Photo by Paul Lindberg.
