Volcanic bomb at SP Crater, Arizona

Volcanic bomb at SP Crater, Arizona

This basalt breadcrust bomb, so called because of the fine breadcrust-like texture, was photographed at SP Crater by geologist Dr. David Kring. Volcanic bombs are thrown from the vent during explosive Strombolian eruptions. They travel through the air in ballistic trajectory before crashing to the ground. Bombs weighing 1000s of pounds dot the summit at SP Crater.
