Entrenched meanders of Marble Canyon, Arizona

Entrenched meanders of Marble Canyon, Arizona

The Colorado River of Marble Canyon winds through entrenched meanders that formed as the Colorado Plateau of Arizona was uplifted in the Neogene. Uplift was accompanied by rapid erosion and downcutting by the Colorado River, hence the development of symmetrical entrenched meanders. Image courtesy of Google Earth.
