Owl Rock near Kayenta, Arizona

Owl Rock is a spire (erosional remnant) of Jurassic Wingate Sandstone just west of U.S. Highway 163, about 7 miles north of Kayenta, Arizona. The mesa beneath the spire is formed of the Triassic Chinle Formation. The Owl Rock Member of the Chinle forms the upper half of the mesa. The Petrified Forest Member forms the lower half of the mesa. Owl Rock is the type locality of the Owl Rock Member of the Chinle Formation.
