Soft sediment deformation

Soft sediment deformation

Folding of a layer of conglomerate and sandstone in the Miocene Chapin Wash Sandstone in the Rawhide Mountains, Mohave County, was likely due to slip while the sediments were still poorly consolidated and probably wet. This is called “soft-sediment deformation” and could have happened during an earthquake. (Photo by Jon Spencer, 2012.)
