Strawberry Crater, San Francisco volcanic field - annotated

Strawberry Crater is situated in the younger, northeast portion of the Late Miocene-Pliocene-Holocene San Francisco volcanic field. This breached cinder cone is about 50,000 years old. In the latter stages of eruption, a lava flow breached the east base of the cone and flowed northeast-ward rafting off the cone interior. Following breaching, the cone returned to fire-fountaining activity and armoring the rim and flanks of the disrupted cone with agglutinate. (Photo by Ted Grussing; annotation by M. Conway.)
